Red Stars Come From Behind, Beat Sky Blue 2-1

Chicago, 25 June 2017 – The Red Stars battled to their first-ever come from behind victory against Sky Blue FC. Madison Tiernan opened the scoring for the visitors, notching the first goal of her NWSL career. Chicago struck back in the second half with a goal each from Vanessa DiBernardo and Sofia Huerta in a span of four minutes to steal the win.

Sky Blue earned an early corner and Taylor Lytle sent the ball into the Red Stars penalty area. Madison Tiernan fought off her defender and headed the ball past a stunned Chicago defense into their net giving Sky Blue the 1-0 lead in the third minute. The goal is Tiernan’s first NWSL goal.

The Red Stars finally cracked Sky Blue’s defense, drawing even in the 63rd minute. Vanessa DiBernardo fought off Sarah Killion, stepped around Christie Pearce, and rocketed a right-footer into the far upper corner. Chicago likes to score in bunches and, true to form, they got the go-ahead goal a mere four minutes later. Casey Short took the ball up the left flank and chipped a short cross into Sofia Huerta near the penalty mark. Huerta took two touches to turn and shoot between two closing Sky Blue defenders. The defenses contained everything thrown at them for the rest of the match.
