NWSL Supporters Spotlight – Spirit Squadron

The Washington Spirit picked up their first home win in an exciting match against Sky Blue last weekend. In addition to all the sights and sounds of the game itself, the Spirit Squadron could be heard chanting and drumming loudly throughout the game as they always are. President and Co-Founder Megan Wesson share some more information about the Squadron.

When did the group start and why?

2013. We wanted to have the same feel at NWSL games that we experienced with Back4Pats at USWNT games.

What are some things that your group does on game day or before game day?

The night before we have “Tifo parties”. We get them painted up and hang out. On game days we try to get to the Plex 3-4 hours early so we can tailgate and pump each other up. We always play KanJam (cornhole with a frisbee).

Where can people find you before/during the game?

We tailgate in Lot 8 (left at the traffic circle, and 2nd right at picnic area sign). In the stands we’re in section 118 of general admission.

What can people expect if they join you for a game?

Constant drumming, chanting, a bit of heckling, and hopefully an enjoyable time.

What is your favorite part of being in a supporters group?

Our love of the team and the game has brought me some of the best friends I could have asked for. Knowing we are enjoying each other’s company while watching the team we love is a great feeling.

The Washington Spirit’s next home game is Saturday May 20th at 7pm. Be sure to stop by lot 8 before or section 118 during the game and check them out. The Squadron is always happy to meet fellow fans of the game!
