Here is this week’s update on NWSL players on loan outside of the Brundesliga and W-League.
Women’s Scottish Premier League (Scotland)
Glasgow City FC 4 – 0 Celtic
Morgan Marlborough scored her first goal for Glasgow City as they defeated Celtic 4-0 during a midweek match Wednesday evening. Marlborough’s goal came in only the 10th minute as she was able to power past her defender and put a well placed ball into the lower corner. Marlborough has been a great addition to Glasgow City; having an immediate impact with the club and really being able to highlight her skills. She came close to scoring several times in the previous week’s matchup, where Glasgow City suffered their first league defeat in nearly six years, and it was only a matter of time until she found the back of the net.
Glasgow City FC 11 – 0 Hamilton
Glasgow City also had a Scottish Cup quarterfinal match over the weekend where they defeated Hamilton 11-0. The victory saw seven Glasgow City players get on the score sheet including Morgan Marlborough. Once again, Marlborough caused trouble for the defense from the first whistle using her speed and power to pressure the back line and find open spaces to create opportunities. The goal came as Marlborough was left completely unmarked and kept onside a mere three yards from the goalkeeper. Marlborough was able to volley it in for her second goal for the club. In addition to advancing to the Scottish Cup semifinals, Glasgow City will be starting Women’s Champions League play October 8th against Medyk Konin from Poland.
Damallsvenskan (Sweden)
Kristianstad DFF 3 – 0 Jitex Mölndal BK
Kristianstad DFF defeated last place Jitex Mölndal BK 3-0 over the weekend. The match remained scoreless until late in the first half when Kristianstad DFF’s offense kicked into gear, scoring twice before the break. That momentum was carried into the second half when a third goal was added in the 49th minute. The match was put out of reach shortly after when Jitex Mölndal BK was forced to play with 10 after a second yellow, and subsequent red card was issued. The win puts Kristianstad DFF on pace for a fifth place league finish which would be their best finish since 2012. Finishing fifth would also secure some much needed additional money for the club who was criticized for signing Becky Edwards during the club’s worst economic crisis. The risk seems to be paying off, however, as Edwards has been a key presence in the lineup and has aided in that fifth place push since joining the club at the end of the Houston Dash season.
Other information to note:
Fortuna Hjørring defeated BSF 6-1 in their 3F Ligaen fixture over the weekend. Nadia Nadim, who was on loan to Sky Blue FC last season, scored the final goal in that match. Fortuna Hjørring will be playing Clube Atlético Ouriense from Portugal in a Women’s Champion’s League match on October 8th.
Apollon Limassol FC has been training and held a scrimmage this past week in anticipation of their Women’s Champions League match. They will be playing Brøndby IF from Denmark on October 8th.
The Nadeshiko League in Japan returns to action next week at the conclusion of the Asian Games.
