NWSL Abroad – Update Five

Kristie Mewis made her debut in Japan and many NWSL players participated in the second leg of Women’s Champions League match ups as well as domestic league competition. See how they all fared in this week’s on loan update!

Nadeshiko League (Japan)

Iga FC 2 – 0 Vegalta Sendai

After not being available the previous week due to paperwork delays, Kristie Mewis made her debut for Iga FC in a 2-0 win over Vegalta. Mewis got the start at forward and played the full 90 minutes. Brittany Cameron featured in the match for Vegalta and gave up her first goals since joining the club. She had previously recorded two shutouts in 4-0 victories over Iga FC and AS Saitama. Rachel Van Hollebeke did not feature in this week’s match.

INAC Kobe 0 – 0 Albirex Niigata

Beverly Goebel, Nahomi Kawasumi and Tiffany McCarty all played 90 minutes as their teams faced off in a scoreless draw over the weekend. This was the second start for McCarty and the first time she played a full 90 as the lone forward in Albirex Niigata’s lineup. For Goebel and Kawasumi, this was their first match played since the resignation of head coach Koji Maeda was announced last week. Goebel was once again placed in the midfield while Kawasumi took a more forward position. INAC Kobe has been struggling in recent weeks and it is interesting that they have continued to play Goebel in the midfield after the move had proved unsuccessful in the previous match and she had scored recently while playing forward. Both clubs are on break until the start of November.

Scottish Women’s Premier League (Scotland)

Glasgow City FC 4 – 0 Hibernian

Glasgow City defeated Hibernian 4-0 to advance to the final of the Scottish Cup. Morgan Marlborough scored a goal, though had several opportunities to add to her tally. Marlborough has proven to be a huge asset to the club since joining after the NWSL season. Whether it be as a target for crosses and set pieces or charging toward the goal looking to take the shot or feed it to a teammate, she has been very involved in every match she has played in. Marlborough had a shot blocked early in the match before putting away a rebound that had come off the post. She would hit the post herself later in the second half. Glasgow City will play Spartans, who handed them their first loss in years earlier in the season, in the Scottish Cup final in November.

Elitedivisionen (Denmark)

Fortuna Hjørring 3 – 0 Vejle BK

Fortuna Hjørring defeated Vejle BK 3-0 over the weekend. Taryn Hemmings got the start for Fortuna and played 71 minutes while Melissa Henderson came on as a sub in the 82nd minute. Nadia Nadim continued her goalscoring streak as she notched two of the three goals for the club. Fortuna is currently still in second place in the league, two points behind Brondby.

UEFA Women’s Champions League Results

Brondby 3 – 1 Apollon Limassol (3-2 agg.)

It took extra time to decide who was moving on to the round of 16, but ultimately, Brondby defeated Apollon 3-1, advancing 3-2 on aggregate. Brondby’s goal came in the 40th minute to force extra time where Lianne Sanderson scored the only goal for Apollon. Brondy answered with two more to end the Cyprus club’s Champions League chances. In addition to Sanderson, Haley Kopmeyer, Mollie Pathman, Ashley Nick and Yael Averbuch also started for Apollon. Danesha Adams came on as a substitute in the 66th minute.

Glasgow City FC 3 – 0 Medyk Konin (3-2 agg.)

In another match that took extra time to decide, Glasgow City FC shutout Medyk Konin while scoring three goals of their own in order to advance to the round of 16. City had been defeated 2-0 in the away leg of the match up, but was able to rally in front of their home crowd to advance. Regulation ended in an aggregate draw with both teams having scored the same number of away goals. Denise O’Sullivan scored four minutes into extra time to give City the lead. Morgan Marlborough played hard the entire 120 minutes and contributed to the team effort that sealed the victory. They will now play Zürich in the round of 16 starting November 9th.

Fortuna Hjørring 6 – 0 Ouriense (9-0 agg.)

After defeating Ouriense 3-0 in their first match up, Fortuna Hjørring crushed them in the second leg 6-0. Nadia Nadim, who has been a relentless goal scoring machine in both the domestic league and Champions League, scored twice in the second half to add to an already impressive lead. Taryn Hemmings and Michelle Betos were unused substitutes for the match while Melissa Henderson did not suit up. Fortuna will now play Swedish champions FC Rosengård starting November 8th.
